š What is the Navy Method?
The Navy Method was developed by the U.S. Navy as a quick, accessible way to estimate body fat percentage using only circumference measurements. For men, it uses waist and neck circumference. For women, it adds hip measurement. It's one of the most accurate estimates among non-invasive methods.
š How to measure correctly
⢠Waist: measure at navel height, without compressing the tape
⢠Neck: measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple)
⢠Hip (women): measure at the widest point of the glutes
⢠Use a flexible measuring tape, close to the skin
⢠Measure in the morning, fasted, for consistency
⢠Take 2-3 measurements and use the average
š Body Fat vs BMI
⢠Body fat percentage is more informative than BMI for athletes
⢠Two individuals at the same weight can have completely different body compositions
⢠Visceral fat (around organs) is more dangerous than subcutaneous
⢠The Navy Method has a margin of error of ±3-4%
⢠For greater accuracy, consider DEXA scan or hydrostatic weighing
